Making Calls With PennyTalk

Customer Service

Advanced Features: No-PIN Dialing

How does PennyTalk work?

PennyTalk is the prepaid international phone card that works from any phone. You can open an account with as little as $25. As you make calls, charges are deducted from your account balance. With each call you place, you will hear your remaining balance. You may add funds to your account at any time or enable the Auto Recharge option so you never have to worry about running out of call time.

To make calls, you simply dial a toll-free 800 number, your PennyTalk Account Number and PIN, and the phone number you want to dial. With No-PIN Dialing, calling is faster without the need to enter your account number with every call.

You may use a credit card (Visa, American Express, or MasterCard) to make your purchase. Click here to sign up.

With PennyTalk, there are no hidden charges. There is a 49¢ connection fee which is charged at the time each call is made and answer supervision is received. There is also a 99¢ monthly service fee that applies to all accounts and is charged on each monthly anniversary of activation. A 90¢ payphone operator recovery fee will be charged on each call made from a payphone.

Are the rates higher if I call TO a mobile phone?

Depending on where you call, a call TO a mobile phone outside of Canada or the U.S. may carry a higher rate per minute. This is due to the higher costs we must pay the international cellular carrier to connect the call. Please consult the rates for the country you are calling.

If there is no cellular or mobile rate listed, the applicable country or city rate is the rate you will pay. For example, all calls to China are just 2¢ a minute, no matter where in China you call and no matter whether you call a landline or mobile phone.

I do not see the city I am calling listed on the Rates page. What rate will I be charged?

If the city or location you are calling within a country is not listed separately on the Rates page, you will be charged the country rate for your call. Note that rates may be lower to certain cities within a country and that rates to mobile phones may be higher than the country rate. For example, all calls to China are just 2¢ a minute, no matter where in China you call and no matter whether you call a landline or mobile phone.

The country I am calling has more than one rate listed on the Rates page. What does that mean?

In some cases, rates differ for calls to cities or cellular/mobile phones within a country. For example, let's look at Brazil. There are four rates listed: Brazil 9¢, Brazil-Mobile 22¢, Brazil-Rio de Janeiro 2¢, and Brazil-Sao Paulo 2¢. This means that calls to any landline in Rio or Sao Paulo are just 2¢ a minute. Calls to landlines anywhere else in Brazil are 9¢ a minute. Calls to any cellular/mobile phone in Brazil are 22¢ a minute.

Rates can vary within a country based on what the local telephone service or cellular service provider charges IDT to complete your call.

I would like to make an international call TO a mobile phone. Will the person I call incur any additional charges?

The answer depends on whether the person you call is within his mobile network or roaming on another network.

If you call a friend's mobile phone while he is in his mobile network, then he will not incur any charges other than the cost of the minutes used for the call. (In cases where the mobile provider only monitors outbound calls, your friend would not be charged for receiving your call.)

If you call your friend's mobile phone while he is roaming on another mobile network, then he will most likely be charged roaming rates by his mobile provider for each minute used on inbound and outbound calls.

Keep in mind that mobile plans and service vary from country to country. The only way to be sure is to check with the people you are calling and find out if their mobile providers charge for receiving international calls.

Will the person I call be able to see my Caller ID?

PennyTalk maintains the Caller ID setting that you have selected for your landline or mobile phone service. In other words, if you have blocked your Caller ID, it will remain blocked when you use PennyTalk. If you have not blocked your Caller ID, then it will be displayed to the person you call.
